Meadow Club was the first course in North America designed by Alister MacKenzie and Robert Hunter and opened in 1927. The course has since been restored by Mike DeVries, who has recaptured many of the features from the original design. We are working on a number of projects that will highlight the course as we close in on our 100th anniversary. Come be a part of our team and help us in our celebration.

Position

The Head Golf Course Mechanic & Shop Manager is the hands-on technical and leader responsible for the safe, reliable, precise, and cost-effective operation of the Club’s golf course maintenance equipment fleet and maintenance shop.

This position directly supervises two Assistant Mechanics while remaining actively involved in diagnostics, repairs, preventive maintenance, cutting-unit setup and grinding, fabrication, fleet management, and equipment planning. Reporting to the Director of Agronomy and Management Team, this position establishes daily priorities, minimizes equipment downtime, supports exceptional quality of cut and playing conditions, and ensures the shop operates with high standards of safety, organization, accountability, and service.

Expectations

The Head Golf Course Mechanic & Shop Manager is expected to take ownership of the equipment fleet, maintenance facility, and performance of the two Assistant Mechanics. Success requires a proactive rather than reactive approach to maintenance, with an emphasis on equipment readiness, quality of cut, safety, accurate recordkeeping, cost control, staff development, and minimizing preventable downtime.

The maintenance shop should reflect the same standards expected on the golf course: organized, clean, efficient, professional, accountable, and prepared.

Qualifications

• Minimum five years of progressively responsible experience repairing and maintaining turf, agricultural, landscape, automotive, diesel, or comparable equipment; golf course equipment experience strongly preferred.
• Previous experience as a Head Mechanic, Equipment Manager, Shop Manager, Senior Assistant Mechanic, or comparable lead technical role preferred.
• Supervisory or team-lead experience preferred.
• Demonstrated expertise in gasoline and diesel engines, hydraulics, electrical systems, mechanical diagnostics, and troubleshooting.
• Demonstrated experience with reel mowers, bedknives, grinding equipment, height-of-cut setup, calibration, and quality-of-cut principles.
• Experience with major turf equipment manufacturers such as Toro, John Deere, Jacobsen, Kubota, and Club Car preferred.
• Ability to read service manuals, wiring diagrams, hydraulic schematics, and manufacturer specifications.
• Strong organizational, problem-solving, communication, and time-management skills.
• Proficiency with computerized maintenance systems, spreadsheets, email, and basic computer applications.
• Valid California driver’s license and acceptable driving record.
• Ability to communicate effectively in English; Spanish communication skills are highly desirable.
